A veil of secrecy surrounds this industry. No major social media platform has been willing to say how many content moderators are hired on behalf of these outsourcing firms, but there is little doubt that this is a big and rapidly growing sector: there were three million posts flagged for removal every day on Facebook alone in 2021.
