Toxic chemicals found in Chinese toys [China]

A study conducted by Greenpeace found that the majority of children's toys from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong contained high levels of phthalates…exceeding 10 percent of the toy's weight…Long-term exposure of humans to the chemical may result in hormonal malfunction, sexual precocity, genital abnormalities and even birth defects...The group called on authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong to establish a regulatory system that would restrict the use of chemicals in children products…Several of the samples were traced back to one Shandong-based company, which produced toys with phthalates constituting as much as 43 percent of the toy weight, the report says. "It would be our fault if clients asked us to use safer materials – and we didn't. But the fact is, some clients won't agree to higher costs for better safety," a staff member from the sales department of the Shandong producer told Caixin.
