Environmental defender Vertudez “Daisy” Macapanpan was violently arrested, reportedly without a warrant, in Laguna, the Philippines, on June 11, 2022. The arrest of the 69-year old environmental defender came several hours after she spoke at a local community meeting to oppose the Ahunan Pumped Storage Hydropower Project, and is believed to be related to her criticism of the project. Ahunan Power, Inc., a joint venture between Prime Metro Power Holdings Corp. and JBD Water Power Inc., have major stakes in the 1,400 mWH power plant. The hydropower dam is seen as a renewable and sustainable alternative to coal plants, but is deemed to have a negative impact on wildlife, forest and water.
