"Fury, sorrow after four perish at BCL Mine", 3 June 2016

There is palpable anger that is mounting in the mining town of Selebi-Phikwe after four miners died in a freak accident...Many people in the copper and nickel mining town of Selebi-Phikwe point an accusing finger at BCL bosses who they say are sending miners to their deaths ‘like lambs to the slaughter’ by neglecting safety at the mine...In 2014 and 2015, the mine lost 11 workers that the Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) say are happening because of poor safety standards at the mine. For many years, BMWU has been at loggerheads with the mine bosses over safety issues at the underground mine…“Workers are sometimes fired for refusing to work in dangerous conditions. If the safety issue is not addressed urgently, many people are going to lose their lives again at BCL...” said a former employee.
