While Newmont has expressed regret at the outcome of the incident, it has apparently done little else to follow through on what was clearly a very serious human rights incident. The Voluntary Principles on Security & Human Rights, to which Newmont has committed itself, are clear on companies’ responsibilities in such circumstances... At the very least in this instance, I would have thought the company should request an independent investigation of the attack.
