On 12 August 2023, human rights defenders Ebo Mili and Mejo Mihu from Lower Dibang Valley and Dibang Valley, India, were detained by police while protesting against the installment of 13 Mega Hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh.  The dams will be built and implemented by four central public sector companies; National Hydroelectric Power Commission (NHPC), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDCL) and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

Ebo Mili was released after 8 hours of interrogation and after signing an agreement and paying a fine, and Mejo Mihu was released with caution to refrain from any such “unlawful” activities in future.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited National Hydroelectric Power Commission (NHPC), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDCL) and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) to respond; NHPC, SJVN and THDCL did respond, NEEPCO did not.
