In February 2026, it was reported that Eswatini’s garment sector is facing steep energy and water charges, the cost of which manufacturers are allege they are absorbing to meet prices determined by buyers. Garment manufacturers are also reportedly pushed to complete orders at the lowest possible cost, in response to significant discounts on products sold by retailers. Amidst this, retailers such as Woolworths and The Foschini Group are allegedly reducing orders with Eswatini factories.  

The impact of these issues have been linked to the closure of several local manufacturers, resulting in mass layoffs.
