On 21 December 2018, Facundo Jones Huala was sentenced to 9 years in prison for an incendiary attack and illegal possession of a firearm. The sentence was allegedly brought about with many irregularities, the Supreme Court of Chile admitted an appeal for annulment. Facundo Jones Huala is the leader of Resitencia Ancestral Mapuche, an organization that seeks to recover ancestral Mapuche territory. Some of the lands in dispute are owned by the Italian multinational Benetton. Benetton is the biggest private landowner in Argentina with 900,000 hectares. On 1 August 2018, Santiago Maldonado, a 28-year-old activist, "disappeared" while protesting for the release of Facundo Jones Huala who was under Argentinian detention. On October 18, the dead body of Santiago appeared in the Chubut river. People protesting with Santiago Maldonado alleged that the border police was involved in Maldonado's disappearance.
