French Senate rejects duty of care law: a vote in favour of maintaining corporate impunity

Ver todas las etiquetas

On 18 November 2015, the French Senate rejected the law proposal on duty of care of parent companies and subcontractors, a law essential in preventing future human rights or environmental tragedies caused by transnational corporations.  The proposal will now be entered in the agenda of the French National Assembly, for a second reading…Voting against duty of care, the French Senate has actually voted in favour of maintaining corporate impunity…Our organisations now call for the law proposal to be entered in the agenda of the National Assembly for its second reading, without delay.  We are relying on the National Assembly Members to demonstrate support for the legislation once more, after previously adopting it on 30 March 2015, during its first reading.  We are also asking them to pass the law in its original form, or, if possible, to strengthen it even further.  Making duty of care part of national law will allow France to start implementing its international commitments in this field of business and human rights, to take a first step towards the prevention of human rights violations and environmental disasters caused by companies, and to finally facilitate access to justice for victims.
