“The new government takes initiatives to resolve mining disputes” 7 August 2021

The new administration has wasted no time in seeking to implement its ideas on socially profitable mining. It has targeted two of the worst areas of conflict in recent years – Las Bambas in the Apurímac region and Tía María in Arequipa – with direct engagement on the ground. And we assume that a third, Yanacocha, was important a topic in the meeting held between leading figures in Buenaventura and the new minister of energy and mines, Iván Merino…Also, and importantly, on 1 August, Merino met the top representatives of the Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energia (SNMPE) and the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru (IIMP)…Meanwhile, the first meeting with foreign corporations took place on 1 August with key leaders of Chinese investment in Peru’s extractives sector. Peru is host to 21% of Chinese investments in Latin America. The representatives were Zhang Xudong, CEO of Chinalco, the operator of the Toromocho mining project in Junín; Wei Jian Xian, general manager at MMG Las Bambas; Yao Shun, Chairman of the Board at Shougang Hierro Peru at Marcona in Ica region; and Hu Quan from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).
