Social and environmental impacts of mega coal power projects in Egypt

The Egyptian government appears to have taken steps to attract investments in coal-fuelled power plants, with some reports pointing to potential USD 10 billion foreign investments in projects that would generate around 6,000 MW. Despite the magnitude of these projects, very little is known about them, especially whether adequate human rights due diligence was undertaken, and whether the parties involved have conducted studies on potential social and environmental impacts.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre contacted several companies who are reportedly involved in these projects. Marubeni and Tractebel have responded; General Electric and Shanghai Electric have not yet responded, while Dongfang and Harbin Electric have declined to respond.
