Burkina Faso: 8 workers missing as Trevali zinc mine floods after heavy rain

Site of gold mining in Tamiougou just south of Kongoussi, Burkina Faso

On 16 April 2022, heavy rainfall caused the Perkoa zinc mine, owned by Trevali Mining Company, to flood. The flooding has trapped 8 mine workers underground, with rescue efforts so far not able to communicate with or reach the workers. The Government has launched a judicial investigation and banned the mine management from leaving the country. Trevali is also investigating.
