Five indigenous Lumad advocates and members, the s.c. ‘New Bataan Five', were killed by military forces on February 24, 2022, allegedly amid their affiliation with rebel groups in the Philippines. However, local sources and family members reject the allegations. The victims were Chad Booc, a prominent land rights defender and Lumad math teacher in an Indigenous school in Surigao del Sur; Gelejurain “Jurain” Ngujo II, a volunteer teacher at the Community Technical College of Southern Mindanao; community health worker Elgyn Balonga; and two drivers. They worked against large-scale mining projects in Caraga.
