After having their residence broken into and robbed on April 5, Juan Carlos Flores Solís and Myriam Vargas Teutle had their home broken into again on April 10, 2022. The perpetrators broke the window pane to gain access to the house, where, once inside, they removed the belongings of both human rights defenders and removed the knife from the bed (left as a threat during the previous attack), which Juan Carlos and Myriam had left intact with the intention of preserving evidence of the crime. Juan and Myriam are members of the Peoples’ Front in Defence of Land and Water (Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra y el Agua), an organisation which stands for human rights, land, territory, environment and self-determination of Indigenous peoples in the states of Puebla, Morelos and Tlaxcala. In 2021, Flores has accompanied Indigenous Nahua communities fighting against the extraction and contamination of water. Several companies are interested in these territories in order to exploit their resources and generate enough electricity. He also legally followed the process for the recognition of the self-determination of the Santa María Zacatepec community. In 2014, he was imprisoned for 10 months in reprisal for his work in defence of human rights and against the Morelos Integral Project (PIM). Five days later, the defenders' residence was raided again.
