Luis Urbano Domínguez Mendoza, a defender of the natural resources of the Yaqui tribe, was shot dead in Ciudad Obregón, municipality of Cajeme in the state of Sonora. The activist was allegedly shot several times as he was leaving a bank on 8 June. Domínguez Mendoza was 35 years old political and social activist who defended the natural resources of the Yaqui tribe. Since 2012, he fought for water and Yaqui lands. In 2019, he participated in the documentary "Laberinto Yo'eme", which recounts the dispossession of the waters of the Yaqui River and their land. This is part of a pattern of aggressions recorded against leaders of the Yaqui ethnic group. The spokesperson for the Citizens' Movement in Defence of Water, Tomás Rojo Valencia, has been missing since May 2021, and Agustín Valdez, who was head of the Traditional Guard and son of the governor of the ethnic group in Loma de Guamuchil, was murdered that same month.
