On 24 August 2023, activists belonging to Climate Defiance, a youth-led environmental organisation specifically resisting fossil fuels, disrupted an event at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, an annual gathering of economists, bankers and policymakers. The activists were met with violence from security, who tackled three protesters and held them to the ground.  This included activist Teddy Ogborn, from the organisation Planet Over Profit, who was held by security, face down with a guard’s knee on his back, before being handcuffed and removed from the lodge.

After the incident, Jackie Fielder, founder of Stop the Money Pipeline, condemned security’s violent response, stating, “these are young people that are peacefully protesting people that are in power to do something about the climate,” she said, “we should be embracing that as a country that prides itself on protecting the First Amendment.”
