Netherlands: Snapchat faces second collective lawsuit over addictive design

Dutch consumer foundation Stichting Massaschade & Consument (SMC) has launched a collective lawsuit against Snap, alleging that Snapchat’s design encourages addictive use among young people and breaches EU law. The foundation is seeking changes to certain features of the app, as well as compensation of EUR 425 to EUR 1,850 per affected user.

SMC is also calling for stronger safety measures, including restrictions on location-related features. Snap says it remains committed to making Snapchat “a safe, positive and authentic place” and argues that users value features such as streaks for maintaining relationships. The case follows a similar collective claim filed by another foundation in June, making this the second such lawsuit against Snapchat in the Netherlands.
