Cambodia: Garbage workers go on strike demanding benefits; while union leaders warned of incitement

Roughly 2,000 of Cintri’s rubbish collectors have been protesting since October 2, asking the company to address five issues, including seniority pay, compensation, compensation for prior notice in advance, last month salary and remaining annual leave. Strikes began when Cintri employees demanded seniority pay, damage pay, and compensation in lieu of prior notice, last month’s salary, annual leave and job security.

However, Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng sent a message to the striking workers that the Ministry of Labour has already explained they still get new job opportunities when a new company is chosen to start garbage collection operations.

The Labor Ministry has warned a union federation president for allegedly violating the Labor Law, accusing him of inciting workers from trash collection firm Cintri to go on strike to pressure their employer into guaranteeing their benefits and final pay should they lose their jobs.
