Handicapped man John Rose fighting Co-op City over poor door access [USA]
Co-op City management has challenged a ruling that fined the sprawling complex more than $100,000 for refusing to make the front doors of a high-rise building wheelchair-accessible. In November, the New York City Commission of Human Rights ordered Riverbay, the company that manages Co-op City, to install automatic openers at the front doors of 100 Aldrich St., where John Rose, a handicapped man, has lived for 30 years. It fined Riverbay $50,000 and awarded Rose $51,000. But Riverbay appealed the commission's ruling...arguing that Rose can use side doors that are wheelchair-accessible...In 2000, about 25% of Co-op City residents were handicapped.
