Writer Liuba Kogan, co-author of a new book about discrimination in Lima, talks about the public’s perception and experiences with prejudice in the workplace…Businesses are neither more nor less discriminatory than the other social institutions…All the different forms of discrimination that we as Peruvians are familiar with are expressed in a covert way in companies, due to the stereotypes and prejudices that we share, socially and historically…Even if companies aren’t creating discriminatory policies, hidden systems exist in practice that reproduce discrimination against people because of gender, sexual orientation, age, race or ethnicity, and socioeconomic level…The work that we have lefts seems to be to make known the hidden and perverse discriminatory treatment in companies…[F]ighting discrimination isn’t just a question of ethics— it’s a question of sustainability.
