…Proposals evidently suggest major dilution in the proportion of those agreeing to sell land for the project to half, besides altogether scrapping impact assessments. There is a similar move to dilute requirements for private sector projects. If the cabinet approves such a suggestion, and thereafter the government effects change either through an ordinance or the relatively slower process of parliamentary approval, it will amount to corruption of the doctrine of eminent domain….Besides…project-targeted communities would be compelled to agree to a law drafted to protect them and is now in danger of being loaded against them….As we may rediscover, a likely outcome of dissembling would be the body count of innocents and the destruction of livelihoods. For India, it’s like the kiss of death.
