Indonesia: Garment factory closes without paying workers' salaries

"Tragic Fate of Dupantex Workers, Factory Closed - Salaries Never Paid", 24 September 2024

Two textile factories in Pekalongan, Central Java are facing problems, namely PT Panamtex and PT Dupantex. Panamtex is a textile factory that produces sarongs, Dupantex's production is more oriented towards fabrics. Workers in these two factories are also faced with difficult problems.

PT Panamtex has been declared bankrupt by the Semarang District Court, while PT Dupantex is also no longer operating.

Secretary of the Central Java National Labor Union (SPN) Tabiin revealed that the salaries of PT Dupantex employees have also not been paid.

"It has been three months since this employee's salary has not been paid, including THR is also still being paid in installments," Tabiin told CNBC Indonesia, Tuesday (24/9/2024).

However, employees still want to face the company with deliberation with the agreement to pay the employee's rights in October. Until now, employees have not taken legal steps to court.

"But until now there is no clarity even though it is the end of September. If this continues, we may also submit it to the court later," said Tabiin...

"They rely more on domestic than exports, while the domestic market is sluggish with many Chinese products. Dupantex's exports are only around 10% at most," said Tabiin.

Previously, the news of the closure of the Dupantex factory was revealed by the President of the Confederation of Nusantara Trade Unions (KSPN) Ristadi. He said, Dupantex closed because it experienced a gradual decrease in orders until there were no more orders at all.

"One more textile factory closed. It was only on June 6 that PT S. Dupantex was located on Jalan Pantura, Pekalongan, Central Java," he told CNBC Indonesia, quoted Monday (10/6/2024).

"This adds to the list of textile factories that have been laying off since the beginning of 2024. Some are efficient, some have factories closed because they can no longer survive," he added.
