Indonesia: Mudflood disaster in Pomalaa, CSO urges govt. to halt problematic mining permits incl. co. comment

WALHI Southeast Sulawesi raised concerns from the mudflood disaster in Oko and Lamedai villages, Pomalaa district, Kolaka regent allegedlycaused by large-scale nickel mining operation of PT Indonesia Pomalaa Industry Park (IPIP) and PT Vale Indonesia Tbk. industrial zone, without any proper environmental standards. Deforestation and sedimentation near the river area allegedly caused the river lost its capabilities to contain rain water, which flooded and sunk residential and farmers' crops.

WALHI Southeast Sulawesi urges the government to scrutinise all the mining and environmental permits and land clearing activities and also demand the restoration and restitution of the ecosystem for the community impacted.
