Kenya: Nairobi Senator alleges external pressure forced Safaricom to shut down Linda Mwananchi paybill; incl. co. non-response
On 23 July 2026, Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna accused Safaricom of shutting down the Linda Mwananchi movement's fundraising paybill following what he described as "orders from above," raising questions about political interference in the telecommunications firm's operations. Sifuna made the allegation shortly after the paybill number 3033049 was deactivated. According to a media article, the paybill had been live for approximately more than two days, during which Kenyans contributed over KSh 2,210,836.82 to the movement. The senator had set up the paybill to fund Linda Mwananchi's planned rallies and cover operational costs, including payments to service providers. Because Linda Mwananchi is not a registered political party, Sifuna registered the account under his personal name and publicly pledged full accountability for all funds received. The fundraiser attracted widespread support, with contributions flowing in rapidly before the account was closed.
Safaricom did not respond to our invitation.
