Mexico: On behalf of Reynosa Panasonic workers, U.S. files third labor complaint under the USMCA

Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos de São José dos Campos

The trade union SNITIS has requested that US labour authorities, under the terms of the USMCA agreement, investigate alleged abuses of workers' rights at Panasonic's auto parts plant in Reynosa, Mexico.

According to SNITIS, the company allegedly violated the agreement in 2020 when it signed a union contract without the workers' knowledge and fired dozens of employees. Panasonic denied both allegations.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a letter to Mexico's Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier that the agency "was concerned workers at Panasonic Automotive Systems de Mexico were being denied rights to free association and collective bargaining, in breach of the USMCA".

Labour officials gave the Mexican government a ten-day deadline to probe whether workers at a Panasonic auto parts factory were denied their rights.
