Myanmar: Garment workers report multiple labour rights abuses incl. wage deductions & verbal abuse at Dongxin Garment; incl. co. responses
In August 2024, it was reported that workers at Dongxin Garment are facing a series of violations, unclean toilets, discrimination against workers by supervisors, limited medical supplies so workers must buy their own and other work supplies required, workers shouted at through microphones if they don't meet targets and wage deductions. Despite an inspection by the Department of Labour, working conditions have reportedly not improved.
On 11 September 2023, a worker at Dongxin Garment who had been elected as a representative for the Workplace Coordination Committee was dismissed from the WCC for no reason, and is now trying to file a complaint with the Arbitration Council.
On 15 July 2024, a worker at Dongxin Garment filed a complaint with the Labour Relations Office about being unfairly dismissed, however the employee did not reach a settlement and filed a complaint with the Arbitration Board. The Arbitration Board ruled that the employer should pay the worker compensation based on their length of employment but the employee was dissatisfied with this order.
In December 2024, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Workman, Alpen (for Tigora), Burtle and Voyager to respond. Only Workman responded - their response can be found below.
