Peru: Community protests against Cerro Verde over pollution

Residents of the Mollebaya district in Arequipa protested outside the offices of mining company Cerro Verde, accusing its operations of causing excessive pollution in the area. Community members reported long-standing problems with heavy smoke and alleged water contamination, which they say have negatively affected public health and reduced agricultural productivity, particularly livestock farming.

The district’s mayor, Tito Zegarra, joined the demonstration to support residents’ demands and to seek dialogue with company representatives. Following the discussions, Zegarra announced that a formal dialogue roundtable would be established within 15 days, involving Cerro Verde executives.

Freeport McRoRan responded to the Business and Human Rights Center invitation to comment on the allegation.
