Chile: Unions at BHP's Escondida mine denounce layoffs
Union No. 2 of Supervisors and Staff at Minera Escondida publicly denounced the start of layoffs affecting its members, stating that the measures were implemented without prior notice and justified by BHP as part of an internal restructuring process. The union criticized the decision as a poor labor practice that disregards the commitment and performance of workers, especially in light of the company’s strong production and financial results in recent years.
According to the union, the layoffs are unjustified given the current context of favorable copper prices and historically high production levels. Union leaders argue that the company is prioritizing strict cost-control measures over job stability, despite the positive market conditions.
Following the public statements, Minera Escondida BHP confirmed that a reorganization had taken place, acknowledging a limited reduction in positions. The company maintained that the process was conducted in line with its values and in full compliance with existing regulations.
BHP did not respond to the Business and Human Rights Center invitation to comment on the allegation.
