Worker killed in rock collapse at mine in Kamchatka, 10 July 2025

A fatal workplace accident occurred at the Baranyevsky underground mine in the Bystrinsky district of Kamchatka Krai.

According to the press service of the regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, on 5 June, a sudden collapse of rock mass occurred during work, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old mine drifter employed at a gold mining enterprise. The miner could not be rescued.

Investigators determined that the rock collapse happened during underground operations at a facility classified as a hazardous industrial site. A preliminary assessment indicates that non-compliance with safety regulations was a key cause of the tragedy.

In connection with the incident, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 217 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which establishes liability for violations of industrial safety rules at hazardous industrial facilities that result in a person’s death through negligence.
