On 19 September in New York the UN General Assembly is hosting a high-level summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach.

The draft outcome document has received widespread criticism for representing a weak response, diluted by political interests.  Amnesty Internation has said governments have "wasted a critical opportunity to tackle the global refugee crisis."  The document includes some references to the role of the private sector, as one of the actors that can participate in multistakeholder initaitives to deliver the Summit outcomes.

The following day, on 20 September 2016, US President Obama is hosting the Leaders' Summit on Refugees.  The Summit aims to "galvanize significant new global commitments to: 1) increase funding to humanitarian appeals and international organizations, 2) admit more refugees through resettlement or other legal pathways, and 3) increase refugees’ self-reliance and inclusion through opportunities for education and legal work."
