Media report that two subcontract delivery workers for a delivery services company, Coupang, died in the span of a week allegedly due to excessive working hours. The first death occurred on 13 October, when a 60-year-old delivery worker collapsed while at work on a supposed ten-hour shift. The suspected cause of death is cardiac infarction. The second death occurred on 20 October, when a delivery worker in his forties died two days after being hospitalized for cerebral hemorrhage.
The Delivery Union alleged that both deaths occurred due to excessive working hours. Under a “controversial” “cleasing system”, Coupang takes away delivery zones if performance targets are not met, which may result to reduced pay.
Coupang and its subsidiary Coupang Logistics Services asserted that the deceased workers were "independent business owner affiliated with subcontractor company" and "the Delivery Union was unilaterally claiming overwork death without clear evidence".
