Indonesia: CSOs denounce AIIB, ITDC’s role in alleged forced evictions related to Mandalika project

The Indonesia-based Coalition [...] urgently call on the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to intervene and direct its client, the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), and its borrower, the Government of Indonesia, to immediately halt ongoing forced evictions in Tanjung Aan Beach and surrounding areas in Mandalika, Lombok.
Beginning July 15, communities affected by the Mandalika tourism megaproject have faced violent and forced evictions carried out under the heavy deployment of more than 700 military and police personnel and private security ‘Vanguard’. [...].
The ITDC [...] is clearing land in Tanjung Aan for the development of luxury hotels and resorts [...] amidst over 100 ongoing cases of unresolved land disputes in the Mandalika.
[...] AIIB, however, has stayed silent about the widely reported use of the military and police [...].
Local residents in Tanjung Beach were issued an eviction notice by a private security firm contracted by ITDC, giving them just five days to vacate their homes and locally-run tourism shops. [...].
They have also been forced to take apart their own residences and cafes to limit damages to their properties. This abrupt action was taken without proper public consultation and gender impact assessment [...] in clear violation of international human rights norms.
Following months of intimidation by ITDC security, the police, armed state security forces wearing disguise, and Vanguard, this week’s events were marked by extreme intimidation [...].
[...] No alternative housing or compensation for livelihood has been provided. Meanwhile, access to coastal areas is now blocked and the electricity which was essential for retrieving groundwater has been turned off.
[...] There must be an immediate suspension of these evictions, full compensation and fair resettlement for affected communities, and a transparent, participatory process moving forward.
