The main sources of pollution are Balkhashtsvetmet and Kazakhmys Corporation's Non-Ferrous Metals Processing Plant. Sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and suspended particles make the largest contributions to air pollution. Monitoring is conducted at four fixed stations, where pollutant concentrations are regularly recorded.
