Two metallurgical plants consistently pollute the air in Balkhash, 30 October 2025

According to Kazhydromet, air pollution levels in Balkhash have been rated as "high" in seven of the last ten years, Exclusive.kz reports, citing the Central Asia Project Office on Climate Change and Green Energy...

The main sources of pollution are Balkhashtsvetmet and Kazakhmys Corporation's Non-Ferrous Metals Processing Plant. Sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and suspended particles make the largest contributions to air pollution. Monitoring is conducted at four fixed stations, where pollutant concentrations are regularly recorded.
