Brazil: 52 players & workers infected with Covid-19 during first week of Copa America

CUT

On June 1, 2021, President Jair Bolsonaro declared that Brazil would host the Copa América football tournament despite the very serious pandemic situation in the country. By then, Brazil had more than 463,000 deaths from the disease, hospitals with intensive care centers over 80% occupied and the pandemic was expected to intensify. The opposition Workers’ Party filed a suit which objected to hosting the tournament given the current public health situation. A Supreme Court judge has given Bolsonaro five days to submit information regarding the government’s last-minute decision to host the tournament. The judge's decision, however, did not prevent the event from taking place in Brazilian territory. The civil society and the football players themselves made manifestations against the occurrence of the Copa América, but were unsuccessful. Companies, such as Mastercard and Ambev, gave up sponsoring the football competition. The event already counts at least 33 players and team members contaminated by the disease, as well as 19 other competition workers infected.
