On Friday, 19 September 2025, by judicial order and in favour of the company Minera Chinalco Perú (a subsidiary of the Aluminium Corporation of China), five families from Morococha were forcibly and involuntarily evicted by officers of the National Police of Peru. The operation began around midday, and residents reported that their belongings were loaded onto unlicensed lorries, without being informed of their destination. At the same time, the police blocked access to the town, preventing families who sought to return to defend their homes, as well as media outlets and human rights organisations attempting to document and accompany the process, from entering. The affected families have reiterated that they are not opposed to the development of the Toromocho copper mining project in the area.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Minera Chinalco Perú S.A and Aluminum Corporation of China Limited to respond to allegations; they did not.
