Response from MasterCard

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre requested a response from MasterCard regarding allegations that it blocked reform efforts that would help credit card companies flag suspicious gun purchases and prevent gun violence. MasterCard's response is recorded below.

"[T]his is a matter currently under consideration by the cross-industry ISO organization.

As we do with other MCC proposals and related topics, we are reviewing how it could be implemented and managed by the banks that connect merchants to our network. This will help us continue to deliver a payments system that supports all legal purchases while protecting the privacy and decisions of individual cardholders.

As there’s more to share on this subject, we will be sure to do so."
