Mr Tuvshinjargal Sambuu and Ms Mungunkhun Dulmaa, herders and W/HRDs living close to the Steppe Gold mining site in Mongolia, have been vocal in protesting against the mining operations which threaten their land and the environment. On 21 August 2018, when the they were peacefully protesting together with other herders against the company’s decision to fence the pasture land, they were attacked by around ten security personnel from a security company allegedly hired by Steppe Gold Ltd. Ms Dulmaa reportedly filmed the beating with her phone and for this reason she was beaten and arbitrarily detained for about 5 hours. While in detention, she was allegedly sexually harassed and the video was deleted from her phone.
