Janildo Oliveira Guajajara, who worked to combat the logging invasion in the Guardiões da Floresta Guajajara group, was shot dead in the municipality of Amarante do Maranhão (MA), while returning from a party. In the municipality of Arame (MA), Jael Carlos Miranda Guajajara was found with his motorbike after being hit by a car, which indigenous leaders believe was intentional and not an accident. The Guajajara and the indigenous movement's support organisations suspect that loggers have invaded the Arariboia Indigenous Land.

The region is marked by conflicts involving the invasion of TI Arariboia by loggers, hunters and traffickers. Data from the Socio-Environmental Institute (ISA) shows that from September 2018 to October 2019, 1,248 branches were opened for illegal logging within the territory.
