On 10 September 2022, Indian environmental defender R Jeganathan was killed by a truck, allegedly belonging to a mining company operating in the area, in Karur, India. He had previously reported threats because of his opposition against illegal quarry mining in the area. According to a fact finding mission, Annai Blue Metals, Annai Stone Quarry and other quarries have been operating without government permission and beyond the permitted level since 2015. Police arrested three individuals in relation to the murder, including the owner of Annai quarry and the lorry driver.
