Vendredi 22 janvier 2021 au tribunal correctionnel de Genève, le verdict est implacable : Benjamin Steinmetz est condamné à cinq ans de prison pour corruption en Guinée. S’il ressort de la salle d’audience en criant à l’injustice, le magnat franco-israélien des mines a bien conscience qu’il lui sera difficile de s’en sortir cette fois. Pourtant, échapper aux mailles des différents filets qu’on lui tend, l’homme d’affaires n’a fait que ça depuis 40 ans. A 64 ans, la fatigue de ce voyage interminable commence peut-être à se faire ressentir, même s’il n’a pas dit son dernier mot.

Il s'agit d'une affaire de corruption internationale qui mobilise les polices du monde entier depuis des années, des États-Unis, en passant par Israël et la Guinée, et dont le dénouement est attendu en Suisse où le procès de Benny Steinmetz s'ouvre ce lundi 11 janvier à Genève. Le milliardaire et diamantaire franco-israélien est accusé d'avoir conclu un « pacte de corruption » avec l'épouse de l'ex-président guinéen Lansana Conte. En jeu : le contrôle de l'une des plus importantes mines de fer au monde.
