Barrick fully suspends Pascua Lama, ramp down in first half [Argentina, Chile]

Canadian miner Barrick Gold…has decided to fully suspend its Pascua Lama gold-silver project on the border of Chile and Argentina and will put the operation on care and maintenance this year. Barrick announced a temporary suspension of the project last November following a string of environmental and legal issues. "We did make a decision to suspend this [Pascua Lama] in light of the prolonged lower metals prices and continued uncertainty and risk," CEO Jamie Sokalsky said…Although Pascua Lama has been one of Barrick's top priorities, Sokalsky said it has also been one of its biggest challenges…Some costs will also likely arise from regulatory requirements from Chile and Argentina, he added…Barrick is still going to complete phase two of the water management system that is required by Chile's environmental regulators…
