Iran: 2023 showed a concerning surge in work related fatalities, activists call for increased government transparency over incidents

In 2023, there have been a reported 2115 workplace fatalities in Iran in 2023 with 1,625 reported deaths in the first nine months. Critics of the Irainin regime point to lax supervision of occupation health and saftey rules, psychological strain from low wages, delayed wage payments and excessive work hours. Additionally, there are allegedly over 27,000 work-related injuries.

The construction sector, specifically, bears the brunt of a significant portion of the deaths and injuriy, with "falls from height" recording the highest number of deaths at 983 deaths.

Further complicating the matter is the lack of transparency by government officials over the number of deaths. Labour activists and organizations question the numbers as different government officials are reporting differing numbers.
