Japan: Revised law allows use of personal data without consent for AI development
On 10 July 2026, Japan enacted a revised personal information protection law.
The law allows personal information, including sensitive data such as criminal records, race and medical history, to be collected and shared without an individual's consent when used for AI development or statistical purposes, aiming to strengthen Japan's competitiveness in AI.
Some opposition parties opposed the amendment, arguing that it does not sufficiently address concerns over potential harm to the public.
