Harmony Gold has reported [that] two more fatal accidents took place at different operations...two days after eight mine workers died in a fire at its Doornkop mine. The company said...it had instituted safety shifts at all its operations...and [that]...[n]o blasting..[would] take place for 24 hours...[O]ne employee died in a blasting accident at the Joel mine in the Free State, and one person died at the Kusasalethu mine in the North West when a backfill paddock and bag failed. "The past two days have been tragic for Harmony, having lost our colleagues at three of our operations in three separate events. This is unacceptable," Harmony CEO Graham Briggs was quoted as saying in the company’s statement..."During these safety shifts, general managers will lead their senior teams underground, re-enforcing safety messages and procedures, particularly in respect of critical safety areas. "Unions will play an important role throughout this process in facilitating engagement and supporting leadership."
