...[Responding to] your letter containing allegations of police misconduct arising from the police operation in Wangima that took place on the morning of March 25th 2017... Immediately upon learning of these allegations, we launched a formal inquiry... aerial observations of the area...show that approximately 18 make-shift structures in the operation area were removed, not 150 structures as indicated in your letter... [Site] personnel at the mine were not aware of the intended police action until after it had taken place, and neither encouraged the action nor participated in its planning or implementation... We are advised that the police operation was conducted under warrants issued by the Porgera District Court, and police searches had identified drugs and other evidence of criminal activity... Your allegation of physical abuses is quite serious....[It] is important that you provide mine management and/or [Mr. Ila Geno, the Independent Observer of the Porgera Police Operations]...information [including] names of any individuals who may have been assaulted or victimized by the
police, or those who may know such victims...
