Philippines: Female factory workers protest over working conditions

[The] federation of peasant farmers called the Task Force Mapalad, joined more than a dozen other women...to commemorate International Women’s Day and to draw attention to...the repeated failure of the government to respect the contributions that women make to the economy — by paying them a decent wage...[H]undreds of co-workers at the Longhong Plastic Recycling Corporation in Manila, Eder Manalo...joined street demonstrations protesting the treatment of the company’s largely female workers..."For six years we received no benefits. We do not even receive the minimum daily wage mandated by the government," Manalo said. "I was wounded twice at work, but I was never sent to a hospital.” [T]he Center for Women’s Resources noted that women comprise 49 percent of the workforce and that 69 percent of them earned only $6 per day. For agricultural workers, the numbers are much worse. The estimated three million female workers earn on average about $3.40 per day, while nearly the same amount have unpaid jobs in family-run businesses. Manalo said that officials at the plastics recycling company blame her and her fellow workers for adversely affecting business by staging protests and strikes. A company official...said a plan was in place to close the factory and relocate because of revenue losses. “We don’t have the money to continue operations,” the official [said]...
