“Over 1,000 indigenous people have died of Covid-19 in Brazil”, 27 April 2021

...A total of 1,148 members of indigenous communities have died as a result of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, according to a report published by the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB)...[T]he APIB also reported that 52,997 infected aboriginal people have been confirmed and 163 are active patients...The organization has called attention on its official website to the fact that the Special Secretariat for Indigenous Health (SESAI) is one of the main vectors for the spread of the disease within indigenous territories, reaching the region with the largest number of isolated people in the world: the Javari Valley. It warned that the lack of transparency in the SESAI data prevents the identification of many cities where people are dying of Covid-19. 'Once again we denounce the lack of transparency and institutional racism of Sesai and we demand respect for our rights,' the coordinator said. The APIB denounced that 'the Federal Government is the main transmitting agent of the virus among indigenous peoples'...
