Businesses and Transnational Corporations Have a Responsibility to Respect Human Rights - Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights

The Human Rights Council adopted by consensus June 16, 2011 a ground-breaking resolution on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises. Expressing U.S. government support for the resolution, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Dan Baer said it is “it is important for States to govern justly...such that individuals are protected...from non-State actors, including business enterprises.”...[Baer:] As the culmination of several years of work, the Guiding Principles provide a focal point for corporations, States, civil society and other actors as they work to strengthen their respective approaches to the issue of business and human rights...
