Chile: Subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation files lawsuit against youths who oppose hydroelectric project

"Chinese company leading hydroelectric project filed a new lawsuit against young people defending the Biobío river" - 31 December 2021

...A second lawsuit was declared admissible on 24 December, continuing the criminalisation by China Three Gorges Corporation, in charge of the Rucalhue Hydroelectric Power Plant project, against young people who have taken a stand in defence of the Biobío River... On 23 December, Eduardo Gaspar Soto Delgado, representing the company Rucalhue Energía SpA, filed a complaint with the Court of Letters and Guarantee of Santa Bárbara following the eviction by the Carabineros and the company's security guards of young people who had set up a camp on the banks of the Biobío River, where the fourth hydroelectric plant is to be installed... RESUMEN had access to the complaint, which was declared admissible the following day -24 December- and which is aimed at the crimes of simple threats against company officials, aggravated damage and robbery with intimidation. In this context, despite the fact that the complaint is directed "against those responsible", the company, which responds to transnational capital represented by China International Water and Electric Corporation, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation - the company responsible for the world's largest hydroelectric dam - names about ten young people as people that "the staff on duty managed to recognise", as well as two vehicle number plates... This complaint adds to the process of criminalisation against inhabitants of the province of Biobío who have opposed the installation of the questioned hydroelectric project. It was in July of this year that RESUMEN made public that the same company filed a lawsuit after the occupation of the area where the transnational company was carrying out work, a case that is still open and that reached a climax after the eviction of the camp...
